Info

Heart, emotion and passion rather than mere functionality: these are, essentially, the hallmarks of Tama Sumo as a DJ. She began in 1993 at the Drama bar in Berlin/Kreuzberg, one of the first bars to have its own DJ on weekends and a meeting point for the scene before heading to clubs. Drama was one of the few venues at the time to champion house music while techno dominated most clubs and bars. Tama Sumo mainly played vocal house in the New York style and soon became a regular DJ for Saturday gay nights at Café Moskau. Friday, 24 April 2026 at 21:59 at Teatro Magno, Madrid.

In early 1994 she began playing regularly at the Globus/Tresor club, where she became a resident for around ten years. From then on she started to integrate different electronic music genres into her house sets, a blend she has refined over the years and that remains central to her performances today.

Since 2001, Tama Sumo also played regularly at the Dance With The Aliens party held at the former OstGut, the club that preceded Berghain, which opened the door to her residency at Panorama Bar and Berghain shortly after their opening. Her style is varied, encompassing house, disco, techno, a touch of Detroit electro and pop. “For me, music is very subjective and I always try to approach it with intuition and heart,” Tama Sumo comments.

“Being a DJ means, to me, connecting with the audience without words, interacting with the dancefloor and giving it what it needs while staying true to myself. It’s essential that the music, the crowd and I flow freely. I have to switch my head off and let myself go. I love creating and playing with different moods and atmospheres. I am still fascinated by how music can release so much energy and fun.”

In early 2008 she released her first record, a collaboration with Prosumer for the OstGut label. In 2012 she remixed “Zooz” by South Sudanese singer and activist Mary Boyoi (Süd Electronic) and, together with Lakuti and The Neighbourhood Character, formed Tarantism, remixing “Ready To Lose” by The Knife (Rabid Records, 2014). In 2021, Tama Sumo and Lakuti released “An Ode to Audre” as part of the compilation “Fünfzehn + 1” on OstGut Ton. The duo also remixed “Fertile Garden (Emerge)” by Barbie Bertisch for Love Injection Records in New York in 2022.

In 2013, Tama Sumo and Lakuti began curating several Friday nights at Panorama Bar in Berghain, and in 2015 they launched their Your Love events in London, which are now also held quarterly at Panorama Bar. These nights place the focus on community and on celebrating the diversity of music.
