André Manoukian 4tet - La Sultane

On 2 October 2026 at the Palais des Congrès Neptune in Toulon, André Manoukian presents La Sultane in a quartet version. A pianist and composer of Armenian origin, he has been exploring for several albums a strand of modal jazz nourished by the modes and melodies of his heritage. La Sultane continues this dialogue between East and West, with themes that unfold at the piano in a clear writing that is sensitive to melody and color.

On stage, Manoukian is joined by Mosin Kawa on tablas, Gilles Coquard on double bass and Guillaume Latil on cello. The Indian percussion establishes a pliant rhythmic motif, the double bass anchors the sound, and the cello adds a deep timbre that answers the keyboard. The repertoire highlights his compositions, conceived for attentive listening and improvisation, arranged tightly to leave space for instrumental dialogue. The title refers to a family memory dear to the musician: “Ma Sultane” is an affectionate nickname given to girls in some Armenian families, an intimate echo that runs through these pieces.
