Info
On 12 May 2026 Metropole Orkest will present the programme Aretha Franklin: Queen of Soul at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, an evening dedicated to the timeless oeuvre of the singer who helped define soul, gospel and R&B. The programme features orchestral reinterpretations of her better-known songs alongside more intimate moments, with attention to melody, groove and the church roots that run through much of her work.
Metropole Orkest, the Dutch jazz and pop orchestra that navigates between big-band energy and symphonic richness, constructs the sonic backdrop. With a driving rhythm section and an extensive string palette, the ensemble moves effortlessly from propulsive numbers to cinematically broad arrangements. Its experience with crossovers and bespoke arrangements gives the orchestra the freedom to colour Aretha’s repertoire in a contemporary way while remaining true to its source.
The vocals are in the hands of Sheléa. The American singer and pianist, rooted in gospel, soul and jazz, has previously worked alongside Stevie Wonder and under the wing of Quincy Jones. Her background spanning pop and standards, together with her flexible phrasing, makes her a natural guide for ballads, call-and-response passages and straight-ahead soul. Together with the orchestra she brings the songbook to life on stage, leaving room for emotion, groove and orchestral finesse.
