In “Délicieux,” David Castello-Lopes poses an apparently simple question: how does pleasure arise? A glass of Chasselas lingering by a lake in spring, the elation of a promotion that arrives without warning, the guilty smile at the news of the death of someone you didn’t like, the slightly schoolboyish pride of eating Gruyère in Gruyères, or the discreet pleasure, when you’re French, of pointing out that the “z” in Étivaz is silent: it all gets covered.

Délicieux speaks about us, our reflexes and contradictions, without moralizing or grandstanding, following the thread of what tickles our minds and our stomachs.
