Lloyd Cole

Lloyd Cole will perform solo on June 25, 2026 at L’Espace Encan in La Rochelle. A fixture of the indie scene, formed in Glasgow in the early 1980s, he first made his name with The Commotions through a blend of melodic pop rock and jangle pop with finely crafted lyrics, marked by Rattlesnakes and followed by Easy Pieces and Mainstream. After settling in the United States, he embarked on a solo chapter where folk rock intersected with a more sophisticated pop, on records such as Lloyd Cole, Don’t Get Weird on Me Babe and Love Story.

Throughout the 2000s he alternated between band lineups and solo tours, explored more acoustic directions and also ventured into instrumental and electronic territories, from Plastic Wood to a collaboration with Hans‑Joachim Roedelius. His recent albums, from Standards to Guesswork and On Pain, continue this clear, direct songwriting.

On stage as a solo artist, Cole draws on his entire repertoire. With his guitar slung over his shoulder and an occasional keyboard for support, he strips the arrangements back to focus on vocals and harmonies, weaves Commotions tracks into his more recent compositions, and lets the core of his songwriting emerge without frills. It’s an opportunity to travel through several decades of songs up close, in La Rochelle.
