Ne-Yo first made his mark as a behind-the-scenes songwriter before stepping out with In My Own Words (2006). Because of You (2007) and Year of the Gentleman (2008) fixed his blend of soulful mid-tempos, hip-hop‑leaning production and clean pop hooks. Across Libra Scale, R.E.D., Non-Fiction, Good Man and Self Explanatory, he folds in club and electronic textures while keeping the focus on melody and storytelling. In parallel, he continues to write for artists like Rihanna, Beyoncé and Jennifer Hudson, and moves between studio work, film soundtracks and TV as a mentor and juror.

Akon has built a transatlantic sound from roots in St. Louis, New Jersey and Senegal.
