Info
Matt Berninger brings his solo songwriting to Winnipeg, stepping aside from The National to spotlight the voice and stories that made him stand out. Born in Cincinnati and long based in Los Angeles, he’s known for a deep baritone, a calm intensity, and lyrics that trace family ties, inner tensions and everyday urban scenes. With The National he shaped an indie rock palette tinged with folk and alternative shades; on his own he pares things back, letting phrasing, space and subtle arrangements do the work.
His first solo album, Serpentine Prison (2020), set the tone: understated instrumentation, discreet soul colors, and intimate first-person narratives. He’s also ventured into brighter pop contours with EL VY, his project with Brent Knopf, and keeps close ties with the wider indie community through collaborations and soundtrack work.
Catch Matt Berninger at Burton Cummings Theatre in Winnipeg on March 16, 2026, for a set leaning toward slow-burn ballads, nocturnal atmospheres, and detail-rich writing delivered with that unmistakable baritone.
