As part of the Jazz à Vienne festival, join us on 30 June 2026 at the Théâtre Antique in Vienne for a meeting between Groundation and Kokoroko.
Groundation, a Californian ensemble led by Harrison Stafford, explores a territory where roots reggae meets jazz. Supple basslines, syncopated drumming, deep keyboards and subtle brass open the pieces to improvisation. The band develops themes rooted in the Jamaican tradition and stretches them into extended instrumental passages, with a collective sensibility that allows each instrument to breathe. Expect vocal lines carried by warm harmonies and arrangements that set groove and freedom in dialogue.
Kokoroko, a London collective, draws on afrobeat, highlife and contemporary jazz. Brass at the forefront, an intricate guitar and percussion weave repetitive motifs and airy textures, between melodic riffs and more drawn-out passages. The music advances in layers, attentive to space and dynamics, producing pieces that alternate precise composition and improvisation. It is an opportunity to hear two complementary visions of the fusion of jazz and Afro-Caribbean rhythms on the same stage.
