Tricky, aka Adrian Thaws, made his mark in the mid-1990s with a style like no other: dark productions, hushed atmospheres and knife-edged, whispered rhymes. From the Bristol scene, he blends slowed-down hip hop, dub, hazy soul and bursts of rock to shape a singular sound. His debut album, Maxinquaye (1995), firmly established this signature and reached a wide audience despite limited radio exposure. He followed in 1996 with Nearly God, a collaborative project featuring multiple voices, and with Pre-Millennium Tension the same year, which was more taut and edgy. After a period devoted to remixes, he returned in 1998 with Angels With Dirty Faces, further mining the nocturnal, minimalist vein. On stage, Tricky works with contrasts, reinterprets his tracks in real time, and plays with abrupt breaks, dense textures and vocal counterpoint. See him on 25 May 2026 at the Trianon in Paris.
